Window installations can be difficult. It's important to get it right because if you screw up or accidentally skip a step, you may find yourself with problems that you don't know how to solve. If the window is not installed to manufacturer’s specifications, the warranty will become invalid. Even more seriously, if the the flashing on the window is not installed properly, rain water will leak through the window and enter into the wall chambers. This can create a large amount of damage to your residence. If the inside of the wall get wet and don't have a chance to dry, moisture damage can have serious consequences. The moisture that intrudes in can lead to the creation of mold, creating unhealthy indoor air. This can also cause the wood to rot, giving way to structural issues. This is why most people hire a window contractor or a window company to execute their window installations.
A window contractor can execute the installation easily and they also offer insurance in case the project has problems. Also, a window company offers competitive pricing and ensures that the project will be done on time and within budget. If you do choose, however, to go against hiring a window contractor and carry out the work yourself, there are a few steps to ensure that you are doing a proper job. First, be sure that the sill plating is secure and level. This is a piece of material that is designed to strengthen the window so there is no chance that it will come out or cause structural damage. Then, when that is finished, set up the self-adhesive sill flashing. Sill flashing is essentially water-proof taping that will keep out leakage that can lead to water damage. Ensure the sill flashing runs up the sides of the window at least six inches from the base. Caulk the outer edges of the window installations evenly along the top and bottom and on each side. This assists in reinforcing the sill flashing and keeps the window in place when it is installed.
The final step is to place the window inside the framework. Using a level, measure the straightness of the window. It should be level side-to-side and up and down. Make sure the caulking is completely sealing the window. Now, place a nail in the upper left corner of the window to brace it. Measure with a level one more time before finishing nailing the window into place. Examine the window to make sure that it can easily open and close. If this process is not followed to the letter it can lead to all types of issues. A window contractor or a window company has experience in doing window installations. If you fail to feel comfortable that you can perform these procedures with accuracy, you may want to hire a window company to complete the window installations for you.
